Is Putin Turning to Terrorism in Ukraine?

In this nervous city in an embattled country, even small explosions can have a big impact.

ODESSA, Ukraine — On Sunday night a powerful explosion shook the heart of Ukraine's most elegant city. The bomb went off right on the porch of the local Euro-Maidan Coordination Council, where volunteers store humanitarian aid for Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russian-backed forces in the east of the country. Authorities categorized the incident as "an act of terrorism," the seventh bombing targeting strategic points of Odessa in the past few weeks.

On December 31, 2014, we reported that the Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine appeared to have received a new supply of armor from Russia. This video revealed the presence of the BPM-97, which stands for Boyevaya Pogranichnaya Mashina ("Battle Border Vehicle") used by the Russian border guards, which are part of the Federal Security Service or FSB. This vehicle is not known to be in service in Ukraine.

It's one of the greatest war crimes of modern times – and the truth still hasn't been told. On July 17th 2014 at about 16:20 local time, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine. All 298 passengers died, including many children. Who fired the missile? Over several months the Berlin-based investigative newsroom CORRECT!V has gathered facts, investigated in eastern Ukraine and Russia, and found witnesses to the missile launch. The investigation unveiled a clear chain of evidence. MH17 was downed by a ground-launched BUK missile – launched by a unit of the 53rd Russian Air Defense Brigade from Kursk. The brigade unit, tasked with protecting Russian tank units, was operating in mid July on Ukrainian territory without displaying national emblems

The West's policy of non-recognition of the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania ultimately worked not just because it rejected any acceptance of the use of force to change international boundaries but because it insisted that the governments that occupation overthrew remained de jure if not de facto in office.

Western countries should be crafting a similar non-recognition policy now, one that doesn't give Putin a loophole which the Kremlin leader is all too likely to jump through given the large number of people in Western capitals who want to find "a way forward" in which Putin can "save face."

The Fate of Ukraine
Events this week may finally wake up Kyiv to the reality it is facing. Ukraine is at war with Russia. It has been so for many months, as was obvious some time ago to those with eyes wanting to see. Ukraine's government has not been in that group, and as military reverses mounted, hiding from painful facts has continued. In their own way, Kyiv mouthpieces have been nearly as dishonest in their depictions of the Russo-Ukrainian War as the Kremlin.

In the face of mountains of contrary evidence, Kyiv insisted that the war in the Donbas has been an "anti-terrorist operation" and that the enemy found there are "terrorists" rather than the Russian soldiers that most of them are. In recent days, Moscow has dropped any pretense and is dispatching battalions across the border essentially openly. Once commonplace efforts to mask insignia identifying these units as regular Russian troops have dissipated as Vladimir Putin feels he no longer needs to hide his aggressive presence in Ukraine.

Why should he? Kyiv is a paper tiger, the Europeans are cowered in the corner, terrified of the Kremlin's next move, while Obama is talking tough about how Russia is losing this conflict, despite the fact that obviously it is not. As usual, Obama is all vapid and chest-puffing talk, coupled with very little action.

NATO: Fighting in eastern Ukraine fiercer than ever
BRUSSELS (AP) — Fighting in eastern Ukraine is fiercer than ever in some locations, NATO's top commander in Europe said Thursday — adding that the weapons systems seen now in the region have in the past heralded a fresh incursion by Russian troops.

What's more, said Breedlove, NATO intelligence has begun to detect "the signatures of air defense systems and electronic warfare systems that have accompanied past Russian troop movements into Ukraine."

He declined to specify which systems, and whether they include the Buk mobile surface-to-air missile battery blamed for shooting down a Malaysian jetliner on July 17, killing all 298 people aboard. But on two prior occasions, Breedlove said, deployment of such weaponry was accompanied by a border crossing by Russian troops.

Why Ukraine Is Losing
(...)
The disorganization and corruption of too much of Ukraine's military is no secret. Indeed, that the higher-ups are criminals who avoid battle is a near-universally held belief among the fighters who are doing the dying around .
(...)
Why the Ukrainian military remains so unready after many months of promises from Kyiv that it is serious about resisting the Russians is an important question. We have heard many excuses proffered about how the military was neglected for two decades after the fall of the Soviet Union, which is true but unhelpful now, when Ukraine urgently needs combat-ready forces. Courage is not lacking while battle skill clearly is.
(...)
Moreover, the critique of many volunteers, that Kyiv is fundamentally not serious about the war, is difficult to refute. Even staunch defenders of the Ukrainian government concede that support for the combat forces is haphazard, at best, and the fighting troops would be starving and freezing without donations from private citizens eager to support "the boys." Kyiv has just upped the draft age limit to twenty-seven, and has promised to soon add 50,000 conscripts to the hard-pressed forces.
(...)
To cite a more recent example that likewise puts Kyiv in a poor light, in 1991 Croatia saw fully one-third of its territory seized in a few months by Serbian rebels who were backed by Belgrade. Croatia had to create a military almost from scratch, possessing few heavy weapons, while burdened with counterintelligence problems at least as bad as Ukraine's today. Yet by the end of 1991, by executing a true mass mobilization, Zagreb fielded an army of 150,0000 in sixty brigades, and thereby managed to blunt Belgrade's effort to subdue Croatia by force.

Tank troops fight to contain rebel expansion in eastern Ukraine

War escalates as 27 civilians killed in rocket attack and Kiev accuses Moscow of sending more soldiers and hardware across the border

Vadim Ozirny is hoping for reinforcements.

The 46-year-old Ukrainian tank commander says politicians might yet stop the conflict that grips the east of his country, but supplies of arms from the West would bring a quicker result.
"Can we win this war? Can we bring it to an end? I don't know. This is not toys; it's not players on a football field. Give me some British Challengers or German Leopards and the Russians will be afraid to come out against us."
(...)
Capt Ozirny, whose call sign is Yatagan (a Turkish sabre), is convinced his opponent is Russia. "That country is fighting with mine," he said. "We can tell by the artillery fire; it's trained Russian specialists firing at us, people who understand the science of it, not some amateur bandits."
Moscow has also sent tanks into the conflict, he alleged. "We've seen one T-90, which only Russia has, and heard the engines of many T-72s, which couldn't be trophies taken from us because we have very few in service."

The Death of Ukraine's Cyborg Army

If the United States is really supporting Ukraine, as President Obama claims, then why are Kiev's forces getting hammered?
On Tuesday night, in a State of the Union speech that was heavy on domestic policy, President Barack Obama heralded a list of American accomplishments abroad, none more dubious than his claim that America was demonstrating "strength" in its response to the Ukraine crisis. "We're upholding the principle that bigger nations can't bully the small — by opposing Russian aggression, supporting Ukraine's democracy, and reassuring our NATO allies," the president optimistically intoned, while dismissing those who had appraised Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea as "a masterful display of strategy and strength." Rather, said Obama, "it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters."
For Obama to be right, and for America to be successfully leading the way to a free, peaceful, and democratic Ukraine, it stands to reason that Putin would have to be on the back foot and growing less belligerent by the day. Then why is he only ratcheting up his aggression?
