Was die Diskussion bei SpON angeht:Einige Kommentatoren sollten dringendst den Grundsatz "Wer keine Ahnung hat,sollte einfach mal die Fresse halten" berücksichtigen.

Vergiss es. Das SPON-Forum ist eine reine Trollgrube geworden. Am schlimmsten wurde es nach Einführung der "Kommentarfunktion", also dass die neuesten Gehirnflatulenzen direkt unter dem Artikel stehen und lesbar sind, ohne sich ins Forum zu klicken.

Nicht nur das. Das Geseiere ist einfach manchmal so unerträglich (siehe zurzeit besonders die unzähligen Statements zu Syrien,) dass man denken könnte, der Rechner und seine Anschlüsse stünden in einer - wie sage ich es nur einigermaßen korrekt  - ach ja, in einem Landeskrankenhaus bzw. - alternativ - alle Insassen hätten Ausgang zum Besuch eines Internet-Cafés erhalten...

On the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the ongoing Syrian crisis dominated international headlines. Even in the United States, fewer anniversary memorial events were held to remember the victims of that tragic day.  But in Afghanistan, it was a different day and a different story.
Last Wednesday, Afghans poured out by the hundreds onto streets across the country, celebrating the victory of its national football team in the 2013 South Asian Football Federation Championship.

Facts which are seldom reported by the mainstream press include:

Over 10.5 million Afghan students are enrolled in schools and more than 150,000 students who graduate go on to pursue higher education at home and abroad, including in India where there are nearly 10,000 students pursuing advanced degrees in different fields;

Afghanistan's 2011 per capita GDP of $591 is five times higher than that in 2001;

The country's commercial infrastructure is vastly improved, with nearly 8,000 kilometers of national, regional, and provincial highways and roads being built over the past 10 years;

Access to electricity has increased by 250%; and

Today over 18 million Afghans have mobile phones. 
All of this is helping the country maintain a 10% growth rate, and is creating access to employment for the first time in countless years.

In their first fighting season leading combat operations, Afghan security forces blunted a planned Taliban offensive and held their ground, but the initial success has come at a heavy price in casualties, highlighting the need to improve the fighting effectiveness of Afghan government forces.

This is the first fighting season where Afghans are fighting mostly independent of U.S. and allied forces. More than 90% of the combat operations are planned and led by Afghan forces. U.S. and allied forces continue to provide support and assistance.

Coalition commanders said Afghan forces have held their ground, and the Taliban's goals of disrupting the government and undermining the security forces have been thwarted. "They are bringing the fight to the enemy," said Army Col. Gary Brito, who helps oversee the development of Afghan security forces. "They have not given up any ground."

U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno, the former top military commander in Iraq, said the lack of public awareness worries him because international engagement is key to sustaining gains made in Afghanistan.

"If we continue on this [current military] path, I think Afghanistan can become a success story, and I worry that's not being talked about at all," he said.

Afghanistan was considered the "good war" with the just cause, the one everyone could get behind. With its clear links to the 9/11 attacks, as opposed to Iraq's, based as it was later learned on faulty intelligence, the war in Afghanistan was much more popular at first, Majidyar said. Because of this, though, it also never generated the attention — or the outrage — of the Iraq war, which led to worldwide protests and heated debates of a kind never seen in relation to Afghanistan.

But now, many see Afghanistan as the foreign policy guest that has long overstayed its welcome.
